Why two hours a day is enough for a toddler

The research on attention spans, the difference between hours and quality, and what the other twenty-two hours are for.

Attention is the budget

A two-year-old's focused attention runs in five- to ten-minute stretches. Two hours of seven short, well-designed blocks spends that budget completely. A six-hour day spends it in the first two and then manages behavior for four.

What the rest of the day is for

Naps, meals, errands, the yard, boredom. Boredom is where the week's ideas get replayed with a stick and a bucket. We build the two hours; you protect the rest.

How to tell it's working

Not by output. By the Little Wins: waved at a friend, carried their plate, sat for one book. Check three a week and you will see the curve.
