Warm-up
Count to 20 by ones while marching, then by tens to 100. Flash 3 fingers: kid says how many, fast.

Say this
At a checkup, the nurse counts your heartbeats, and she can’t skip one or count one twice! Put your hand on your chest. Feel that thump? Today you’re a careful counter too: touch each thing once and say one number for each touch.
Teach it: touch it, draw it, write it
1 · Hands on
Set out 7 cotton balls. Kid slides each one onto a plate while saying one number. One touch, one number, no skipping.
2 · Draw it
Grown-up draws 6 hearts in a row. Kid counts left to right, making a dot in each heart as they say its number.
3 · Numbers
Grown-up writes the number counted, 6, under the row. Kid traces it and reads it out loud.

Play it
Heartbeat Drum: roll one die. Drum that many beats on an upside-down pot with a wooden spoon, counting each beat out loud: one beat, one number. Then the grown-up rolls and drums, and sometimes sneaks in an extra beat on purpose. Kid shouts “Oops!” when the beats and the numbers don’t match. Play for 5 minutes.
In real life
Nurses and doctors count heartbeats and breaths at every checkup to see how your body is doing. Try it today: put your ear gently on a grown-up’s chest, listen for the lub-dub, and count 6 thumps out loud, one number for each thump.
