Press two fingers on the side of your neck and count your heartbeats for 15 seconds while I time you. A grown-up's heart beats about 100,000 times a day! If Mom's heart beat 104,860 times Monday and 98,975 Tuesday, how many is that? Numbers that big are easy if we add one place at a time.

1 · Hands on
On a paper mat with columns 100,000s to 1s, show 36,258 and 21,475 with beans. Push each column together; trade 10 beans for 1 in the next column left.
2 · Draw it
Write each number in expanded form (split by place): 36,258 = 30,000 + 6,000 + 200 + 50 + 8. Do the same for 21,475, lined up, and add each place.
3 · Numbers
Add each place: 50,000 + 7,000 + 600 + 120 + 13 = 57,733. Then the standard algorithm (the stacked way): add right to left, carry when a place makes 10+.

Use the digits 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 once each to make two 3-digit numbers with the greatest possible sum. What is the sum?
Play it
Big Sum Showdown. Take the 10s and face cards out of a deck (ace = 1). Each player flips 5 cards and arranges them into the biggest 5-digit number they can, then flips 5 more for a second number. Add the two. The bigger sum wins the round, but only if the other player checks it by adding place by place. Play 5 rounds.
In real life
Big sums show up in budgets, step counters and stadium crowds. Task: look up how many seats two stadiums or arenas near you hold. Add them. Could both crowds together fit in a 100,000-seat stadium?
