Say this
Put two fingers on the side of your neck and find your pulse. Count the beats while I time one minute. Now imagine a school nurse checked 358 kids one week and 267 the next. How many kids is that? Big numbers are easy when we add one place at a time.
Teach it: touch it, draw it, write it
1 · Hands on
Build 358 and 267 with base-ten blocks. Push the ones together: 15 ones. Regroup: trade 10 ones for a ten rod. Then trade 10 tens for a hundred flat.
2 · Draw it
Draw a place-value chart: hundreds, tens, ones. Sketch squares, sticks and dots for both numbers. Circle 10 dots and redraw them as 1 stick in the tens.
3 · Numbers
Stack 358 over 267, places lined up. Ones: 8 + 7 = 15, write 5, carry 1. Tens: 1 + 5 + 6 = 12, write 2, carry 1. Hundreds: 1 + 3 + 2 = 6. Sum (total): 625.

A clinic saw 468 kids in September. In October it saw 159 more kids than in September. How many kids did it see in the two months together?
Play it
Closest to 1,000. Take the 10s and face cards out of a deck (ace = 1). Each player flips 6 cards and arranges them into two 3-digit numbers, trying to make a sum as close to 1,000 as possible, over or under. Add them on paper while your partner checks. Closest wins a point. First to 5 points wins.
In real life
Cashiers, nurses and coaches add all day: items on a bill, shots given in a week, points in a game. Task: find two prices under $5 on a receipt or in a store flyer. Write each one in cents ($3.47 is 347 cents) and add them the way we did today. Check your total with a calculator.
