Silent e with a: Brave Jane

I can read and spell a_e words like cape

ELA.2.F.1.3

Start here

Say this

Watch this magic trick. I write cap. Now I add an e at the end: cape! The e doesn’t say a thing. It’s silent, but it makes the a say its name, /ā/. Try it: tap becomes tape, mad becomes made. Now let’s read about Jane, who has to be very brave at her checkup.

Sounds and words

a_e: the silent e makes a say its name (cap → cape)

  • cap → cape
  • tap → tape
  • mad → made
  • safe
  • brave
  • shake
  • scale
  • grape
  • the, a, to, of, is, has (heart words)
  • I, you, your, are, for, what (heart words)
  • he, she, her, be, do, does (heart words)
  • says, gives, eyes, Dr. (heart words)
  • heart, blood (heart words)

Teach it

  1. 1Write cap. Add an e to make cape. Say: the e is silent, but it makes the a say its name, like in cake.
  2. 2Your kid reads each word. For each one, point to the a and the e first, then read the whole word.
  3. 3Spell: say tape, made, safe. Your kid says each sound, writes the word, then checks for the silent e.
  4. 4Read the sentences twice, the second time smooth, like talking. (Dr. is short for Doctor.)

Brave Jane

Jane has a checkup at ten. She sits on a bench next to Dad. Jane is not glad. “I do not like shots,” Jane says.

Dad gives Jane a hug. “You can be brave,” he says.

Then Dr. Blake steps in with a big grin. “Hop on the scale, Jane!” she says. Jane steps up on the scale. Dr. Blake checks it. “You got big!” she says.

Next, Dr. Blake sets a flat disc on Jane’s chest. Thump, thump, thump. “That is your heart,” she says. “It pumps blood to the rest of you.”

Last, it is time for the shot. Jane shuts her eyes and grabs Dad’s hand. She does not shake. Snap! The shot is quick. It stings a bit, but just a bit.

Dr. Blake stamps a grape on the back of Jane’s hand. “You are a brave kid!” she says.

Jane waves at Dr. Blake. She made it! Jane gave it her best, and that is what brave is.

Talk about it

  1. 1

How does Jane feel at the start? Which words tell you?

    Show answer

She is not glad (worried). The clue is she says, “I do not like shots.”

  2. 2

What three things happen at Jane’s checkup, in order?

    Show answer

She gets on the scale, Dr. Blake listens to her heart with the disc, and then she gets a shot.

  3. 3

What does Jane do to be brave during the shot?

    Show answer

She shuts her eyes, grabs Dad’s hand and does not shake.

  4. 4

The story says, “that is what brave is.” What does brave mean here?

    Show answer

Doing your best even when you feel scared. Jane was scared of the shot but did it anyway.

Grammar: Proper nouns: names of people, pets and places start with a capital

  1. 1

Fix it: jane went to see dr. blake.

    Show answer

Jane went to see Dr. Blake. (Names and titles get capitals.)

  2. 2

Which words need capitals? my dog rex likes the park in miami.

    Show answer

    My, Rex and Miami

  3. 3

Is “doctor” a proper noun in “The doctor is kind”? Why?

    Show answer

No. It isn’t a name, so it’s a common noun with no capital.

Handwriting

5 min

Copy: Jane was brave at her checkup. Tip: the tall letters (J, b, h, k, t) touch the top line.

Writing: My Checkup (or the Day My Heart Beat Fast)

Narrative (true story) · today: Plan it

Pick a true story: your last checkup, or a time your heart beat fast (a race, a big jump, a scary moment). Tell it on 4 fingers: First, Next, Then, Last. Sketch each part in 4 boxes.

Write one sentence with two a_e words, like "Jane was brave." Start with a capital and end with a period.

Spelling: Silent e: a_e and i_e (the e makes the vowel say its name)

5 min
  • cape
  • tape
  • made
  • safe
  • brave
  • kite
  • time
  • five
  • smile
  • white

Read the list together and find the pattern (Silent e: a_e and i_e (the e makes the vowel say its name)). Circle it in every word.
