Warm-up
Facts: 7+3, 8+2, 6+4, 9+1 (they all make 10!). Then count by tens from 13 up to 93.

Say this
Hold out both hands. In one: 3 dimes and 2 pennies (32¢). In the other: 4 dimes and 5 pennies (45¢). How much in all? Put dimes with dimes: 7 dimes is 70. Pennies with pennies: 7 pennies. 77¢! That’s today’s trick: tens go with tens, ones go with ones.
Teach it: touch it, draw it, write it
1 · Hands on
Build 32 and 45 with base-ten blocks (or bundles of 10 straws). Push the tens together, then the ones: 7 tens and 7 ones is 77.
2 · Draw it
Quick drawing: a line for each ten, a dot for each one. Draw 32 and 45. Count the lines (70), then the dots (7): 77.
3 · Numbers
Stack it: 32 on top, 45 under it, ones under ones. Add the ones (2 + 5 = 7), then the tens (3 + 4 = 7). 32 + 45 = 77.

Use the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4 one time each to make two 2-digit numbers. Add them. What’s the biggest total you can make?
Play it
Four-Card Sums: pull out only the aces (1), 2s, 3s and 4s. Each player flips 4 cards into a square: the top row is one number, the bottom row is another (a 3 and a 2 on top is 32). Add tens, then ones, out loud. Biggest sum keeps all 8 cards. Play until the pile is gone.
In real life
Receipts are adding on paper. Try today: find two prices on a flyer, a menu or the pantry shelf, like $23 and $41. Check that the ones add to 9 or less. Add tens with tens and ones with ones, then let your grown-up check it on a phone calculator.
