Facts within 10: 4 + 2, 5 + 3, 6 + 1, 7 − 2, 9 − 3. Answer fast; fingers are fine.
Start here
Say this
At a checkup, the nurse counts your heartbeats. Pretend I already counted 8 in my head. Now listen: lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub. That’s 3 more. Do I start over at 1? No way! I start at 8 and keep going: 9, 10, 11. That trick is called counting on.
Teach it: touch it, draw it, write it
1 · Hands on
Put 8 cotton balls in a cup and 3 beside it. Say "8" for the cup, then touch the rest: 9, 10, 11. No need to count the 8 again!
2 · Draw it
Draw a number path: a row of boxes numbered 1 to 20. Put a finger on 8 and hop 3 boxes: 9, 10, 11. Circle where you land.
3 · Numbers
8 + 3 = 11. For 3 + 8, start at the bigger number anyway: 8, then 9, 10, 11. Same answer, fewer counts.

Play it
Count-On Flip: take the face cards out of a deck (ace = 1). On your turn, flip 2 cards and say the bigger number. Then tap the table once for each count of the smaller one: “9… 10, 11, 12!” Right answer? Keep the cards. Most cards when a 5-minute timer rings wins.
In real life
At a pharmacy, a screen may say “Now serving 12.” If your ticket says 15, count on: 13, 14, 15. That’s 3 more turns! Try today: find a price under $15 at the store or on a flyer. If it cost $3 more, what would it be? Count on to find out.
